Objective:

The course objective is to teach the fundamentals of transformers and the different type of transformer connections.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe a common method of Fourier analysis
  • Define and describe various connections including delta-to-wye, wye-to-wye, wye-to-delta, and delta-to-delta
  • Understand power ratings and the difference between true power and reactive power
  • Understand of telescoping and how to minimize this effect
  • Define magnetism, describe key properties of magnetic materials, and explain the molecular theory of magnetism
  • Discuss electromagnetism and understand key properties of electromagnetic fields along with common magnetic quantities
  • Understand the measurement systems for magnetic quantities, and describe key properties of electromagnets
  • Explain permeability as it relates to ferromagnetic materials along with developing an understanding of saturation as it relates to transformers
  • Define turns ratio of the windings, explain various forms of mutual induction and identify common transformer power losses
  • Explain power factor and how impedance plays a big role in transformer performance and short circuit stress
  • Understand transformer design including core types, cooling methods, coolants, and temperature rise
  • Identify common transformer fittings and accessories
  • Describe connections in a single-phase circuit and explain how polarity is determined
  • Describe a 3-phase circuit
  • Describe an open delta connection, describe a delta connection with high leg to ground, and how polarity is determined in a 3-phase transformer
  • Recognize the physical connections of a 3-phase dry type transformer normally used to provide power to a commercial building
  • Recognize the physical connections of three sets of single-phase transformer configured to make a 3-phase bank
  • Define and describe odd-numbered, even-numbered, and triplen harmonics
  • Define and explain total harmonic distortion, related concepts, and common sources of harmonics
  • Understand harmonic effect on neutral currents and describe common methods of reducing harmonics problems
  • Describe the process of power generation and the power distribution network
