Description

Objective:

The course objective is to address health issues facing communities by making changes at the individual, community, organizational and governmental levels. We will examine methods and theories to promote healthful changes using real life examples. Specifically we will cover individual change theories, community development strategies, Diffusion of Innovations theory and media advocacy strategies.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the relationship between health and selected health issues
  • Discuss the constructs of four theoretical models (Health Belief Model, Trans-Theoretical Model, Social Cognitive Theory and Diffusion of Innovations)
  • Describe at least three factors that influence the community development process
  • Discuss at least two methods for assessing a community's needs and assets
  • Identify at least three strategies used in media advocacy
  • Describe how individual change theories can be used in developing programs for health
  • Discuss methods for organizational change
