Description

Objective:

The course objective is to educate law enforcement and non-law enforcement personnel involved in criminal investigations and crime scene analysis, including detectives, investigators, crime scene technicians, forensic technicians, and District Attorneys' investigators. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to recognize, collect, preserve, and identify entomological evidence.

Learning Outcomes:

  • explain what forensic entomology is and how it is used in law enforcement
  • identify the major taxonomic groups and species of arthropods encountered on decomposing bodies
  • compare the environments in which bodies decompose and the arthropods associated with each
  • describe the environmental factors that affect decomposition
  • explain how to collect, preserve, rear, and ship arthropods recovered from human remains
  • apply information learned in the course to demonstrate how to recognize, collect, preserve, and identify entomological evidence
