Description

Objective:

The course objective is to educate individuals serving as, or planning to serve as, public safety dispatch personnel on the concepts and proper use of technology and effective communication in stressful situations, radio communications and technology, liability and legal issues, cultural considerations, and how to handle and respond to callers in mental or emotional crisis. Upon completion of the course, participants will be prepared to perform the duties of a telecommunications call taker or dispatcher in both emergency and non-emergency situations.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Summarize the basic concepts of ethical principles.
  • Summarize the proper procedures in identifying and processing a crisis situation involving callers dealing with family violence, stalking incidents, or sexual assault.
  • Summarize protocol involving radio communication techniques.
  • Discuss Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) resources and the confidentiality of public safety information pertaining to telecommunicator.
  • Explain stress management and critical incident stressor sources.
  • Identify the proper procedures in identifying and processing a crisis situation that includes callers involved with human trafficking, hostage and barricaded persons incidents, and missing and exploited children cases.
  • Discuss the roles and responsibilities of telecommunicators as well as the governing body, TCOLE.
  • Identify different types of emergency communication technology used in public safety emergency communications.
  • Summarize the processes used in processing incoming calls for service.
  • Identify liability and legal issues involving telecommunicators.
  • Discuss various dimensions of diversity.
  • Discuss the proper procedures in identifying and processing a crisis situation that involves callers dealing with mental illness or suicidal ideation.
  • Demonstrate the proper procedures in identifying and processing callers dealing with suspicious packages, other emergencies, and the emergency management role in those situations.
