Objective:

Upon the successful completion of this course, participants will be able to apply techniques for the proper identification of microorganisms.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will be able to explain the importance of the various classes of microorganisms to the environment in which they live.
  • Participants will be able to classify microorganisms into individual kingdoms.
  • Participants will be able to examine the functions of a microscope.
  • Participants will be able to demonstrate the proper preparation of microscope slides.
  • Participants will be able to apply the process for identifying microorganisms.
  • Participants will be able to demonstrate identifying the various types of algae.
  • Participants will be able to categorize the types of protozoa being observed.
  • Participants will be able to demonstrate identifying rotifers.
  • Participants will be able to recognize the ecology of microscopic animals.
  • Participants will be able to discuss the effect of fungi on the environment and wastewater treatment operations.
  • Participants will be able to explain the importance of bacteria classification to wastewater treatment.
