Description

Objective:

The course objective is to introduce students to academic and professional writing through the study of genre and rhetoric in written works. Students will learn how to refine sentences and paragraphs and develop the skills necessary to improve their writing. Students will also practice locating, organizing, and using sources in their own research-based essay.

Learning Outcomes:

  • describe the relationship between genre conventions and the author's use of rhetoric.
  • revise written works to reflect correct grammar and usage standards.
  • conduct research by locating and evaluating sources.
  • create a research-based essay that is presented both textually and visually.
  • apply knowledge of formatting and style guides by citing research sources.

  • Understanding academic writing, studying genres. analyzing rhetoric, finding sources for writing, using sources in writing, writing process, writing introductions, writing body paragraphs, writing conclusions, revising and editing, paragraphing and sentence structure, using the parts of speech, using punctuation, spelling correctly, delivering presentations, creating PowerPoints, creating Prezis, and creating photo essays
