Description

Objective:

The course objective is to analyze basic theories of morality such as utilitarianism, altruism and existentialism. Students also examine some ethical issues such as social and personal, ethical issues in healthcare, business, and other areas.

Learning Outcomes:

  • explain the origins and evolution of ethical theory from antiquity to the contemporary era, as well as identify the views that persist and those that have been rejected
  • properly use ethical terminology, concepts, and theories to cultivate a deep comprehension of ethics as a branch of philosophy
  • define and explain several major theories of understanding normative human interactions and behaviors
  • identify the logical basis of theories and arguments regarding moral dispositions and how they interface with one another
  • assess a myriad of ethical theories and philosophical analyses while comparing them based on scope, type, and foundation
  • utilize basic theories and concepts of normative human behavior to evaluate a variety of approaches and solutions to moral dilemmas in medicine, the workplace, the environment, and social interactions
  • reflect on the student's own ethical and moral worldview by relating personal choices with those prescribed by certain theories of ethics
  • create a unique set of ethical norms based on the student's own experiences, as well as their secular or religious belief systems
