Objective:

The course examines the development of historiography and historical methods in relation the academic discipline of history.

Learning Outcomes:

  • describe the processes and means by which historians or researchers develop historical accounts
  • explain how historians or authors composed historical accounts from the ancient world through the modern era
  • explain how the academic discipline of history became professionalized in the 19th century and how this development affected historiography
  • describe at least five examples of major historians and their works from the ancient world to the 20th century
  • analyze how at least three major historians contributed to the development and understanding of history in the 19th and 20th centuries
  • describe the process of writing a historiographical essay or history research paper
  • describe history, historiography, and historical methods in relation to the academic discipline of history
