Description

Objective:

The course objective is to describe the historical, philosophical, and policy-based foundations of education. By the end of this course, learners will be able to explain how these factors have influenced contemporary teaching practices and educational systems.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the contributions of key figures in the field of education across historical and modern contexts.
  • Explain major educational theories proposed by theorists such as Bruner, Binet, Skinner, Gardner, Piaget, and Thorndike.
  • Apply major educational philosophies, such as behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism, and humanism, to real-world classroom scenarios.
  • Explain the impact of key U.S. education policies and reforms, including A Nation at Risk, IDEA, No Child Left Behind, and Title IX.
  • Explain how the political advocacy efforts of educational organizations such as the NEA and AFT have shaped public education.
  • Describe how education in the U.S. has evolved from colonial times through the 21st century.
  • Describe the function and purpose of Individualized Education Plans, Section 504 regulations for public schools, and initiatives aimed at improving equity in education.
  • Describe the roles of the local Board of Education, the state, and the federal government in public education.
