Description

Objective:

The course objective is to analyze the fundamental principles of health, such as physical and mental wellness, aging, chronic diseases, environmental health, and healthcare systems, which will provide a broad foundation to make informed decisions about health and well-being throughout the lifespan.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe major types of violence and injury, both intentional and unintentional, and basic safety promotion strategies.
  • Describe factors influencing personal health, including wellness definitions, credible health information, psychosocial aspects, stress management, and health assessments
  • Explain human relationships and sexuality, focusing on healthy relationship traits, sexual identity, and core concepts of reproduction and family planning.
  • Describe principles of nutrition and weight management, including assessment methods, benefits of physical activity, and risks of obesity.
  • Explain the aging process and end-of-life issues, covering aging theories, changes in older adulthood, major causes of elderly morbidity and mortality, and stages of dying and bereavement.
  • Compare and contrast psychosocial health aspects, including symptoms, causes, and treatments of mental disorders, strategies for well-being, and roles of psychiatrists vs. psychologists.
  • Explain environmental health concepts, key toxicants, and the role of policy in managing health risks.
  • Explain the U.S. health care system, its services and insurance options, and factors influencing personal health care choices.
