Description

Objective:

The course objective is to explain different facets of the historical development of special education along with the legal frameworks that protect and promote the educational rights of people with disabilities.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explain the complexities and consequences of significant governmental legislation that influenced the rights of individuals with disabilities, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Summarize the key components of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), with emphasis on Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) and Least Restrictive Environments (LRE).
  • Develop a behavioral intervention plan that aligns with the disciplinary protections in place for students with disabilities.
  • Identify who qualifies for services and compare how IEPs and 504s differ in intent and application.
  • Describe the legal rationale, outcomes, and educational implications of major court cases related to the rights of students with disabilities.
  • Describe the government's role in education at the local, state and federal levels.
  • Analyze recent trends in special education, such as the long-term effects of the No Child Left Behind Act, as well as the efforts to include students with disabilities in general classrooms.
  • Explain how differentiated instruction supports inclusive and equitable learning for students with disabilities.
