Description

Objective:

The course objective is to describe, compare, contextualize, and construct historical arguments about major events in American history. Topics covered are westward expansion, industrialization and urbanization,
WWI, WWII, the Cold War, and the civil rights movements.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the causes and effects of industrialization and urbanization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
  • Describe American imperialism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
  • Explain the causes and effects of U.S. social, labor, and civil rights movements from the late 19th century to today.
  • Analyze how Reconstruction impacted U.S. society in the short and long term.
  • Explain the causes and effects of major economic and financial crises in the U.S., including the Wall Street crash of 1929 and the Great Depression.
  • Identify the causes, major events, and impacts of wars and conflicts the U.S. has been involved in from 1965 to today.
  • Analyze how evolutions in technology and the media have shaped contemporary U.S. society and politics.
