Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide students with a introduction to the foundations of core chemistry topics such as intermolecular forces, solutions, chemical reactions, electrochemistry, solubility equilibrium.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Determine acid-base and solubility equilibrium and apply knowledge of chemical equilibrium to write equilibrium expressions and calculate equilibrium reactions.
  • Define electrochemistry and identify applications of electrochemistry.
  • Describe the chemistry of the atmosphere and identify phenomena in the atmosphere.
  • Identify the chemical properties of metals and nonmetals and describe how their compounds are used in industrial, chemical, and biological processes.
  • Define coordination compounds and describe the reactions of coordination compound reactions and applications.
  • List types of radioactive decay, describe radiometric dating using nuclear reactions, and identify the benefits and drawbacks of radioactivity.
  • Identify classes of organic compounds, describe functional groups in organic compounds, and define polymers and synthetic organic compounds.
  • Utilize the rate law equation, determine reaction order, and calculate half-life
