Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide students with a comprehensive overview of various chemistry topics such as the structure of atoms, chemical compounds, chemical bonding, scientific measurement, and energy.

Learning Outcomes:

  • List the subatomic particles in an atom and describe atomic structures of elements, isotopes and ions
  • Describe how to calculate atomic mass, molar mass and percent composition and identify the empirical formula of an experimental sample using given data
  • Apply rules for writing and balancing a chemical reaction and utilize molar quantities to calculate percent yield and predict theoretical yields of products
  • Identify exothermic and endothermic reactions and calculate heat energy change in a chemical system or reaction
  • Describe ionic bonding, covalent bonding, and coordinate bonding and predict molecular geometry using the VSEPR theory, orbital hybridization and valence bond theory
  • Analyze a problem using the scientific method and apply scientific measurement and dimensional analysis
  • Identify and apply formulas for calculating pressure, amounts, volumes, temperature, molar masses and density of gases
  • List the four quantum numbers of electrons and describe the electron configuration in an atom
  • Identify relationships and trends on the periodic table
  • Identify properties of liquids, solids, and solutions and describe the intermolecular forces that affect those properties
