Description

Objective:

The course objective is to teach students the fundamentals of different types of white-collar crime. Students will study the history of white collar crime; types of white-collar crime such as corporate, avocational, political, and techno crimes; and the processes for regulating, prosecuting, and defending it.

Learning Outcomes:

  • demonstrate understanding of the criminal and sociological history of white collar crime
  • synthesize the characteristics and classifications of white collar crime, theories that explain white collar crime, and the costs and consequences to victims of white collar crime
  • describe the various perspectives and methods for studying white collar crime
  • compare and contrast different types of white collar crimes, including corporate, avocational, and occupational white collar crime, governmental and political crime, state-organized crime, enterprise crime, contrepreneurial crime, and technocrime
  • explain how civil and criminal law can be used to control white collar crime
  • explain how law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal levels try to regulate white collar crime
  • speculate the future of white collar crime, including the new crimes that may emerge as structural transformation of society occurs
