Description

Objective:

This lab-only course is designed as a standalone addition to StraighterLine's Organic Chemistry I course. Students complete at home laboratory experiments provided by eScience Labs, track and record results and take lab-based questions reflected in the graded lab reports, and complete lab-based assessments to meet the lab requirement. Students study alkanes and cycloalkanes, stereochemistry, alkyl halides, and alkenes through experiments in melting points, hydrocarbons, structural isomers, stereoisomers, column chromatography, polymers, and the synthesis and analysis of soap.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Predict the names of organic compounds based on their structure.
  • Contrast hydrocarbons based on their melting points and solubility properties
  • Synthesize a polymer from polyvinyl acetate glue and sodium tetraborate.
  • Calculate the melting point of tetracosane and 1-tetradecanol.
  • Construct models of simple hydrocarbons, aromatics, aldehydes, and ketones using a molecular modeling kit.
  • Synthesize four soaps from plant oils.
  • Illustrate organic compound structural isomers based on molecular formulas.
  • Construct models of geometric and optical isomers with a molecular modeling kit.
  • Extract two food dyes in grape soda using column chromatography.
