Description

Objective:

The course objective is to introduce a range of basic sociological principles so you can develop your own sociological imagination. Students learn about the origins of sociology as a discipline, and some major sociological theories and research methods. Students also explore the topics of sex and gender, deviance, and racism. As we move through the course, try to develop your sociological imagination by relating the topics and theories you read about to your own life experiences.

Learning Outcomes:

  • discuss the sociological imagination and apply it to social phenomenon describe and critically discuss major theoretical perspectives, such as conflict theory, structural functionalism, and symbolic interactionism;
  • explain social interaction and the elements of social structures;
  • describe the effects of social factors on population growth, movement, and the environment;

  • describe the elements of culture, including language, nonverbal communication, norms, and values;
  • discuss the major ideas about how humans learn, develop, and become integrated into society;
  • define and discuss stratification, including inequalities of class, race, gender, sexuality, and age;
  • define sociology and its purpose
  • describe the importance of social institutions to society from a sociological perspective;
  • discuss the relationship between collective behavior, social movements, and social change.
