Description

Objective:

The course objective is for learners to apply the scientific method, explore phenomena, and exercise critical thinking skills using virtual lab simulations from Labster. This lab course reinforces topics from the Microbiology lecture course, such as bacterial cell structure and function, microscopy, microbe genetic and biochemical characteristics, and disease pathogenicity. To meet the lab requirement, students write lab reports and answer formative quiz questions.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the steps to getting started with science labs, including accessing Labster simulations, technical requirements, and where to get help.
  • Summarize the importance and main categories of microorganisms, and the techniques for visualizing them.
  • Correlate genetic and biochemical characteristics of microbes with methods of identification and manipulation.
  • Associate microbial growth with environmental conditions and control methods.
  • Relate pathogens to disease, immune response, and laboratory analysis.
  • Categorize microorganisms and acellular agents based on their distinctive characteristics.
