Description

Objective:

The course objective is to build on introductory English composition skills by focusing on the research process. Students will learn how to effectively source information using proper research techniques, beginning by crafting a research question and culminating in a 6-8-page persuasive essay that will influence others to adopt or change a particular perspective. Students will also explore how persuasive writing strengthens important professional skills including communication, problem solving,
and innovation skills.

  • locate and analyze sources and determine whether they are valid and credible
  • examine the credibility and ethical application of a source to a specific stance or perspective

  • explain why persuasive writing is important
  • state the key elements of persuasive writing
  • identify audience and examine their positions, values, knowledge, and assumptions

  • outline a persuasive argument including an appropriate thesis statement, supporting information, and persuasive elements
  • identify which elements would be more persuasive for a given audience (numbers, story, etc.)
  • use an appropriate balance of appeals in writing to persuade an audience
  • great persuasive writing that ethically uses evidence and appeals to persuade a target audience to adopt a new perspective towards achieving a desired purpose
