Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide an overview of concepts on business research methods covering variables, types of variables, literature review, conceptual framework, research questions, hypothesis, research design; elements of research design, concepts of measurement; reliability and validity in measurement; survey research methods review; secondary data sources; questionnaire design; qualitative techniques; sampling technique, data collecting, data coding, and data analysis.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Distinguish between business research, decision support, and business intelligence systems
  • Understand research ethics and codes of- conduct issues, the goal of 'no harm,' and differing dilemmas for participants, researchers, and research sponsors
  • Describe the strengths and weaknesses of various designs of observation approaches and when these studies are most useful
  • Describe the management research question hierarchy
  • Explain the importance and applicability of editing, coding, and content analysis, and how to deal with 'don't know' responses and missing data
  • Understand when and how exploratory data analyses and cross-tabulation techniques are used
  • Define hypothesis testing development and procedures, statistical significance, and parametric versus nonparametric techniques
  • Describe multivariate techniques and their applicability
  • Discuss what's required to formulate a research hypothesis
  • Describe what's included in research design, data collection, data analysis, and reporting, including the influence of the budgeting process
  • Explain the basic stages, major types, major descriptions, and relationships between variables in research design
  • Compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative methods and discuss the variety of and controversies surrounding qualitative methods
  • Understand the process for selecting appropriate and optimal communications approaches
  • Explain the relationship between attitudes and behavior
  • Discuss the impact of the communication method and question construction on instrument design
