Description

Objective:

The course objective is to review Basic English concepts and introduces students to college-level writing with an emphasis on basic grammar and composition. Students will apply their learning to a variety of writing activities emphasizing the development of paragraphs and essays.

Learning Outcomes:

  • State why and how good reading and writing skills can be a benefit in life and career
  • Describe strategies to improve reading skills
  • Describe and apply the four steps of the writing process
  • Identify parts of a paragraph and differentiate between the paragraph pattern types
  • Produce grammatically correct simple, compound, and complex sentences and identify common sentence problems. Apply the proper use of verbs, pronouns, nouns, modifiers, punctuation, spelling and diction in writing
  • Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to
  • Identify essay components and differentiate between the types of essay patterns
  • Construct grammatically correct paragraphs and essays
