Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide engineers, architects, community building officials, and code administrators with training in six key building science modules: (1) Flood provisions of I-Codes and ASCE-24, (2) Incorporating future risk into design, (3) Strategies for maximizing floodproofing success, (4) Steps to a successful elevation project, (5) Wind mitigation for buildings through effective policies and recovery procedures, and (6) Critical building performance considerations for wind events.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Apply I-Codes and floodplain management principles to the design, construction, and permitting of buildings in flood hazard areas, while identifying and coordinating applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations.
  • Evaluate floodproofing strategies and elevation mitigation techniques by analyzing design considerations, feasibility factors, project management responsibilities, and successful case studies for new and existing nonresidential structures.
  • Incorporate future flood risk projections into building design by sourcing and applying climate and hazard data, performing risk assessments, and communicating risk-reduction strategies effectively to stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of wind mitigation standards and saferoom design by recognizing critical wind provisions in building codes, assessing vulnerability of structures to high winds, and identifying resilience strategies for critical facilities.
  • Navigate key tools, resources, and funding mechanisms such as FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center, BCEGS, FEMA Benefit-Cost Analysis (BCA), and Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) project applications to support mitigation planning and code compliance.
