Description

Objective:

The course objective is to develop executive-level core competencies in Facilitating Community Risk Ownership, Social Intelligence, Political Savvy, and Leadership and Collaboration. The course reinforces strategic management and leadership behaviors, including policy development and high-level decision-making. It culminates with the presentation of capstone projects to senior Emergency Management and Homeland Security officials. These collaborative projects are designed to leave a lasting impact on the profession by advancing the practice of emergency management.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Debate the value of stakeholder engagement strategies, including negotiating buy-in, assembling coalitions, and building networks aligned with an emergency management agency’s strategic direction.
  • Examine theoretical leadership frameworks and collaborative strategies that enhance coordination between communities and stakeholders across all phases of disaster management.
  • Analyze social dynamics and behavioral patterns before, during, and after disasters, and formulate strategies that promote stakeholder collaboration and community resilience.
  • Design a process to assess and communicate how social, economic, natural, and built environments influence disaster risk awareness and reduction within communities.
  • Collaborate on a capstone project that integrates leadership, strategy, and stakeholder engagement to create a legacy contribution to advancing emergency management practice and professionalism.
