Description

Objective:

The purpose of this seminar is to provide analysts with in-depth knowledge of recurrent themes in Russo-Soviet history that today continue to impinge upon Russian Federation foreign policy initiatives. Too often, personnel have not been exposed to basic yet essential historical "threads" that underlie and connect respective missions, contributing to a disparate, atomized perception of Russian Federation international relations.

Learning Outcomes:

  • apply how the post WWII domestic environment ensured a clash of values between the USSR and America
  • apply how dynamic forces continue to drive the Russian Federation's domestic and foreign policy objectives today and are discernable in elements of students' respective missions
  • analyze the implications of major historical Russian themes to the Soviet Union as it moves through the cold war
  • analyze the highlights of the Cold War and how those events demonstrate an ongoing identity crisis for the Russian Federation

General Topics:

  • • Russo-Soviet geography/geo-politics • European and Russian intellectual history • Russo-Soviet historical perceptions of defense of the motherland • American and allied responses to Russo-Soviet foreign policy • Russian Federation world view
