Description

Objective:

The goal of this course is to prepare students to progress to an ILR Level 3+ in listening. Through reading, discussing, and analyzing listening materials of different genres such as TV shows, movies/dramas, podcasts, commentaries, interviews, discourses, stand-up comedies, etc. with a variety of accents, along with daily class discussions, students will be able to improve their listening, speaking, and higher-order thinking skills. In addition, their reading skills will also be strengthened through supplemental materials to enhance what they're learning in the listening cuts. Transcription, and translation will also be a focus of the class to help ensure the students' understanding.

Learning Outcomes:

  • translate the spoken discourse and identify the author’s intent and target audience
  • apply a variety of listening strategies and cultural knowledge learned to aid listening comprehension
  • analyze the structure and organization of spoken discourse, examine the speaker’s use of rhetorical devices, and draw connections among ideas, evaluated via class presentations and discussions
  • justify a stand or decision by sharing and elaborating thoughts, articulating and defending opinions, and supporting and critiquing other’s discussions
  • synthesize information, implications, and significance identified in cuts, assessed by a final project
  • construct thoughtful discourse in the target language with 85% accuracy in grammar and word choices.
  • summarize the main idea, basic concepts, and details of spoken discourse
