Description

Objective:

By the end of the course, students will be able to read authentic level 2 Ukrainian texts and listen to level 2 Ukrainian audio passages and demonstrate comprehension by answering questions, writing summaries in English, as well as translating authentic Level 2 texts and doing partial transcripts of authentic Level 2 audio/video cuts.

Learning Outcomes:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the use of participles and verbal adverbs
  • recognize impersonal constructions, and conditional and subjunctive mood
  • summarize content of an authentic Ukrainian reading or listening passage and gist into English
  • translate an authentic Ukrainian reading or listening passage into clear idiomatic English
  • demonstrate an understanding of verb conjugation and aspect
  • recognize basic humor, irony and emotional overtones in colloquial Ukrainian passages
  • determine the main point of the text and an author’s views, ideas, and opinion
  • analyze the meanings of vocabulary, sayings and set phrases, from context
  • research meanings of unknown vocabulary with the use of a dictionary
  • produce a transcript of an authentic audio passage
