Description

Objective:

The course objective is to synthesize learner comprehension of slang, profanity, and humor presented in the context of Russian crime dramas. Russian crime dramas contain exemplary references to modern societal trends and traditions, formal and informal ways of communication, religious sanctity (often pretentious) and routine immorality, unbelievable luxury, and depressing poverty within Russian society. The course will build up learner knowledge of the informal sublanguages and build learner schemata of the correlation between communicative situations and crime-related topics. This one-week advanced-level course aims to provide students with training that will improve their skills as analysts of the modern (i.e. real) Russian language.

  • detect slang, profanity and humor-expressed emotional overtones, implications, and hidden assumptions
