Description

Objective:

The course objective is to enable students to perform at a solid ILR Level 2+ or above in reading and listening with enhanced speaking and writing proficiency. The course is designed to develop and enhance the student's transcription, translation, analytical, synthetic, and evaluation skills. Students will perform frequent topical research, and prepare and conduct presentations or projects every week except for the last week of the course.

Learning Outcomes:

  • demonstrate comprehension of an authentic ILR level 2+/3 Korean written text or audio passage that includes common colloquial Korean or four-character idioms by answering questions, paraphrasing, and summarizing in English, without the use of working aids, with at least 77% accuracy
  • distinguish facts from opinion in an authentic ILR Level 2+/3 Korean written or audio passage, making inferences using supporting evidence from the text
  • deduce the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary in an authentic ILR Level 2+/3 Korean written or audio passage, using contextual clues and real-world knowledge
  • analyze dialectal differences, including North and South Korean, by applying real-world knowledge and context
  • demonstrate socio-cultural and sociolinguistic competences by appropriately utilizing sophisticated cultural references such as proverbs and idioms
  • extract the Essential Elements of Information (EEIs) from an authentic ILR level 2+/3 Korean written text or audio cut, without the use of working aids, with at least 77% accuracy
  • identify the tone of an authentic Korean ILR level 2+/3 written text or audio cut and the author's intent, providing justification from the source material, without the use of working aids, with at least 77% accuracy
  • compose a journalistic translation of an authentic ILR level 2+/3 Korean text that includes common colloquial Korean expressions or four-character idioms, without the use of working aids, with at least 77% accuracy
  • produce a report written in Korean, using correct grammar and register using key information from research findings
  • report research findings to instructor and students via an oral presentation that effectively delivers the message and meets the needs of the target audience
