Description

Objective:

The course objective is to enhance and improve the reading and listening skills of an intermediate level Spanish language analyst by reinforcing ILR (Interagency Language Roundtable) Level 2+/3* (ACTFL Advanced High/Superior) grammar concepts, and reading/listening comprehension skills, as well as strengthening the student's ability to transcribe and translate authentic ILR Level 2+/3 Spanish audios and texts.

Learning Outcomes:

  • demonstrate comprehension of an authentic ILR Level 3 Spanish audio passage by answering questions, outlining, paraphrasing, and/or summarizing in English
  • identify the tone of an authentic ILR Level 3 Spanish audio cut and the speaker's intent, providing justification from the cut
  • analyze authentic ILR Level 3 content by applying knowledge of Spanish vocabulary, grammar, and Latin American culture
  • produce a verbatim Spanish transcript of an authentic 3-4-minute ILR Level 3 Spanish audio clip, using working aids
  • produce an idiomatic journalistic English translation of an authentic 500-600-word ILR Level 3 Spanish text, using working aids
  • produce a complete gist, including Essential Elements of lnformation, of an authentic ILR level 3 Spanish audio passage, using working aids
  • justify translation and writing choices, citing Spanish grammar rules and exceptions
  • apply transcription methodologies and phonolinguistic principles (elision, parsing, sound confusion, minimal pairs, etc.).
  • identify the tone of an authentic ILR Level 3 text and the author's intent, providing justification from the text
