Description

Objective:

The course objective is to increase students' global linguistic, sociolinguistic and intercultural competence in North Korean dialect and society. Students will improve their structural, lexical, and socio-cultural competences to include: knowledge and control of vocabulary, idioms, grammar forms, syntax, and socio-cultural references in North Korea. Comparisons with South Korean society will be drawn to assist students in better understanding North Korean society and vernacular.

Learning Outcomes:

  • analyze aural and written North Korean texts and evaluate implied meaning of texts in contexts for various topics with 100% accuracy
  • compare and contrast the societal elements within both North and South Koreas utilizing socio-linguistic, socio-cultural, and intercultural competencies
  • evaluate information, messages, nuances, connotations, and significance identified in aural and written texts
  • create cohesive and coherent opinion and criticisms when engaging in meaningful discourse using critical thinking skills
  • synthesize researches, analyses, and socio-cultural information and make a presentation or write an essay on North Korean Society with 90% accuracy
  • make a gist, summarize, translate, and transcribe in North Korean reading and listening texts at the 2+ level or higher with 100% accuracy
