Description

Objective:

The course objective is to strengthen the student's ability to analyze authentic ILR (Interagency Language Roundtable) Level 3* (ACTFL post-Superior) Spanish texts and translate them into idiomatic journalistic English. Additionally, the course aims to increase students' overall communicative competence, with emphasis on increasing linguistic and socio-cultural knowledge, through a variety of independent research, exercises, peer-feedback and instructor feedback.

Learning Outcomes:

  • distinguish between neutral statements and biased language used in an authentic Spanish ILR level 3 text
  • assess passages within an authentic Spanish ILR level 3 text that indicate the author's political orientation
  • compose a journalistic-style English translation of a 500-600 word authentic Spanish ILR level 3 text on a variety of topics, using working aids
  • deconstruct an author's argument within an authentic Spanish ILR level 3 text
  • compare and contrast factual statements and personal opinions the author uses to argue a point
  • critique the accuracy of the information presented in a translation or summary
  • summarize a 500-600 word Spanish ILR Level 3 text
