Description

Objective:

The course objective is to develop learner skills and schemata to comprehend the authentic/most frequent informal language of Russian youth: street talk colloquialisms; computer/Internet slang; hacker slang; demotivational posters, memes and allusions; and delinquent slang. This one-week, advanced-level course aims to provide students with training that will improve their skills as analysts of the modern (i.e. real) Russian language.

Learning Outcomes:

  • recognize youth slang delivered with normal clarity and speed
  • contrast differences between varieties of street slang
  • detect slang-expressed emotional overtones, implications, and hidden assumptions
  • identify the socio-cultural background of youth related to their use of slang
  • translate/paraphrase youth slang using appropriate working aids
