Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of Russia's policies and interests in the Arctic region. Students will familiarize themselves with the Arctic's history, geography, and agreement with bordering countries.

Learning Outcomes:

  • identify the territories that comprise the Arctic region
  • determine within reasonable limits the significance of historical changes in the Arctic and articulate persuasive and well-structured historical arguments
  • identify and describe Russian military developments in the Arctic and Russian concerns over sovereignty and potential attacks on its strategic and economic assets
  • analyze Russia's economic development in the Arctic and the financial cost of its expansion in the northern territories
  • write an English review, one page minimum, of a Russian documentary
  • prepare a summary, with supporting facts, critiquing Russia's foreign policy against other Arctic countries
