Description

Objective:

The course objective is for students to be able to process listening or reading material of ILR text 2+ and 3 with at least 85% accuracy in an operational environment.

Learning Outcomes:

  • answer content-related questions about passages
  • identify essential pieces of information necessary for comprehension
  • create titles for passages or passage sections
  • gist texts after initial reading or listening
  • summarize texts after 1-2 exposures
  • predict unfamiliar vocabulary accurately based on topic
  • estimate the meaning of unfamiliar words using context, word formation, and background knowledge
  • restore grammatical elements like verb endings, prepositions, etc., in cloze-type exercises to form coherent and grammatically correct texts
  • render translations into idiomatic English
  • parse sentences grammatically with 85% accuracy
  • identify high-frequency grammatical and syntactic structures in context
  • decode meanings of figurative and idiomatic expressions and nuances using background knowledge
  • determine fact from opinion, providing justification support from a passage
