Description

Objective:

The course objective is to help students improve their Korean proficiency by focusing on learning intermediate/advanced Chinese four-letter idioms, and its usages in higher-level texts. The primary goal for this course is for students to learn most commonly used traditional Chinese idiomatic expressions, individual Chinese characters (Hanja) that comprise the idioms, and additional Chinese character-based words. By studying these idiomatic expressions and Chinese words, students will improve their structural, lexical, and socio-cultural competences to include knowledge and master higher-level vocabulary, idioms, and socio-cultural references. Students will learn 300-350 Chinese words used in Korean reading and listening commonly found in intermediate/advanced Chinese character examination (Hanja Level 8-7).

Learning Outcomes:

  • analyze aural and written texts and evaluate and discuss contextual and implied meanings of Chinese idioms/characters/words in relevance to FLO topic areas as well as literature and history
  • compare and contrast the societal elements within Korean and American cultures utilizing socio-linguistic, socio-cultural, and intercultural competencies
  • synthesize information, both implicit and explicit messages, and the significance of Chinese Idioms/characters/words in texts
  • create meaningful discourse using critical thinking skills
  • present to the class by creating his/her personal stories or opinions utilizing the Chinese idioms/characters/words that he/she learned with 80% accuracy
  • identify Chinese idioms/characters/words written in Chinese and translate its meanings including homonyms and polysemy
