Description

Objective:

The course objective is to improve students' listening and reading comprehension proficiency to at least the 2+ level, reinforce grammar rules and constructs, and build upon known vocabulary.

Learning Outcomes:

  • demonstrate comprehension of passages with at least 80% accuracy
  • produce a gist of passage after the initial reading/listening
  • interpret passages after an additional 1-2 exposures
  • use context, word formation, and background knowledge to predict the meaning of unfamiliar words
  • identify high-frequency grammatical and syntactic structures in context
  • distinguish fact from opinion and provide justification from the text
  • analyze areas of the passage where it is necessary to "read between the lines" to understand the full ramifications of the text in its wider cultural, political, or social context
  • identify author's tone or intent based on and supported by options using relevant literary devices within the text; word choices, irony, sarcasm, etc.
  • render translation into proper, idiomatic English
  • transcribe audio cuts into Persian script
