Description

Objective:

The course objective is to enhance student's higher level lexical, structural, and socio-cultural competencies in Korean through reading comprehension activities, gisting exercises, writing assignments, and discussions using authentic materials, including editorials or commentaries, literature, newspapers articles, and other publications.

Learning Outcomes:

  • analyze written texts and evaluate contextual and implied meaning of texts in relevance to FLO (Final Learning Objective) topic areas as well as literature
  • synthesize information, messages, implications, and significance of lexical semantics in texts and demonstrate understandings of knowledge and the texts as existing within a broader content, including the intentions and audiences for which a text may have been constructed
  • create their own written opinions and criticisms, and articulate as incorporating an awareness of multiple perspectives and across sociocultural aspects as reflecting upon their reading with 90 % accuracy in both speaking and writing
  • compose with some precision and details when writings about concrete/abstract topics relating to particular interests and special fields of competence
  • produce a focused and cohesive synthesis essay using structural conventions such as organization, formatting, paragraphing and tone, and a body of knowledge inside written work, including paraphrase, quote, explain, interpret, comment, cite, and document
  • write a reflection upon their reading and writing processes, and rhetorical effectiveness.
  • summarize authentic reading materials at the level 2+ or higher on current North or South Korean topics

  • Autobiography - A Single Race Nation, written by Gu Kim under his pen name Baekbeom, a former Korean statesman politician
  • Expository prose about characteristics of tigers and their historical meanings to Koreans
  • Essay literature Rose, written by a poet, Chun-deuk Pi, and literary expressions to convey emotion
  • North Korean editorial about a South Korean politician, Hong, Joon-Pyo, and viewpoint analysis comparing and contrasting newspaper articles from South Korea and North Korea on the same issue
  • Novel A Houseguest and My Mother, written in 1935, and the Korean society in the context of the story
  • Speech text analysis of North Korean texts from Kim Jong-un's speech on the 2018 Panmunjom Declaration
  • North Korean editorials on current and/or pending issues
  • FLO topics (culture, education, economy, society, NK politics, NK nuclear, Military, Unification)
