Description

Objective:

The course objective is to help students enhance their Korean language proficiency from ILR level 3 to level 3+ and beyond. The primary objectives of the course include listening and reading comprehension, complex grammar features, discourse analysis, and critical thinking skills in subject-matter domains. The course specifically focuses on student's productive language skills by actively involving the use of Korean language in classroom discussion, argumentative essay writing, and classroom debate that can be readily transferred to the real-world situations.

Learning Outcomes:

  • demonstrate comprehension of the authentic ILR level 3/3+ Korean spoken texts that include complex grammar patterns, idiomatic/figurative language, different styles of speech by responding to critical thinking, higher-order questions with at least 77% accuracy
  • explain the relationship between a particular author's tone and intent through word choices and their meanings in social, historical, and cultural contexts with at least 77% accuracy
  • compare and contrast the different viewpoints regarding the event and the supporting details used from Korean language media sources (e.g., news and social commentaries), using appropriate syntactic structures with at least 77% accuracy
  • analyze ideas and arguments about the multiple sides of social issues as well as discourse patterns employed in both written and spoken Korean texts with at least 77% accuracy
  • construct their own viewpoints, using critical thinking skills, through various types of oral and written products (e.g., argument essays, debate)
  • demonstrate comprehension of the authentic ILR level 3/3+ Korean written texts that include complex grammar patterns, idiomatic/figurative language, different speech styles by responding to critical thinking, higher-order questions with at least 77% accuracy
