Description

Objective:

The course objective is to enhance students' reading comprehension skills on classical prose and increase their knowledge of Chinese cultural and societal attitudes as reflected in classical writings. Through detailed analysis of classical prose and research into the ancient cultural/societal norms and beliefs of the era, students will develop a deeper understanding to the references to these works that are often seen and heard in modern literature and media.

Learning Outcomes:

  • interpret authentic printed classical Chinese texts
  • compose a reflective written work in Chinese analyzing the classical Chinese texts presented during the course
  • evaluate the variances in the usage and meaning of words between classical and modern Chinese
  • analyze function words used in classical Chinese and compare/contrast them with how they are used in modern Chinese writings
  • summarize and critique each classical article in Chinese
  • predict possible outcomes in modern political and societal situations based on an understanding of classical Chinese language-related subject matter, terminology, and historical facts
  • produce a reflective essay in Chinese on the significance and application of classical Chinese texts to the modern Chinese cultural environment
  • author an idiomatic and/or formal English translation of authentic classical Chinese texts, using working aids, with 85% accuracy.
  • critique the authors' intent, implied meaning and the structure of the texts in Chinese
