This course is recommended for a total of 15 semester hours in the upper-division baccalaureate degree category.
Description

Objective:

This examination is comprised of a three hour, 160-item computer administered examination that covers the scope of practice of an ophthalmic technician. Candidates must also pass a computer-simulated skill evaluation in five areas. One hour is allotted to complete the Performance Test.Students must receive a passing score in all 5 skill areas to successfully pass the performance test.

Skills Measured:

This examination requires candidates to demonstrate the following abilities: measure patient's ocular motility using prism and cover test at a distance; perform manual lensometry: identify and measure prism; perform fundus photography and identify fluorescein angiography phases; measure, compare, and evaluate pupil function at a distance; and evaluate versions and ductions, identifying any abnormalities. The skills and/or knowledge measured include history taking (3 percent); pupillary assessment (4 percent); equipment maintenance and repair (3 percent); lensometry (6 percent); keratometry (3 percent); medical ethics, legal, and regulatory issues (5 percent); microbiology (5 percent); pharmacology (8 percent); ocular motility (11 percent); assisting in surgical procedures (3 percent); ophthalmic patient services and education (10 percent); ophthalmic imaging (6 percent); refractometry (6 percent); supplemental skills (10 percent); tonometry (5 percent); visual assessment (6 percent); and visual fields (6 percent).
