Description

Occupation Description:

Painter-decorators (also known as Painter-Commercial, Painter Construction) apply decorative and protective finishes in residential, commercial, institutional and industrial settings. They prepare a variety of surfaces (wood, masonry, drywall, plaster, concrete, synthetics, stucco and metal) prior to the application of materials such as paint, high performance coatings, waterproofing, fireproofing, varnish, shellac, wall coverings and special decorative finishes.

Program Description:

The 3-year Painter-Decorator apprenticeship program outlines a hybrid approach of on-the-job learning (OJL) and related classroom instruction. Apprentices successfully completing this program apply their skills and abilities as Painter-decoratorsin residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial settings.Painter-decorators are employed by construction companies, painting contractors, building maintenance contractors, or are self-employed. They work on projects such as home interiors and exteriors, residential high rises, wall covering work, industrial tanks and plants, bridges, airports, institutions, marine and offshore projects, and other commercial and industrial projects.

Program Objective:

The objective of this course is to prepare students for a career as a Painter Decorator.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Introduction to Painter-Decorator Trade: • Explain the various career opportunities and job requirements of the painter/decorator trade. • Identify appropriate tools, equipment, and materials and application processes for various projects. • Demonstrate safe and appropriate area preparation prior to applications. • Identify appropriate application procedures as required by various coating materials
  • Surface Preparation and Cleaning with Lab: • Identify selected substrates and surfaces and suitable methods of surface prep. • Recognize and identify industry standard surface prep methods and specifications. • Identify the ramifications of improper surface prep. • Recognize and describe the various categories and uses of lowpressure water washing equipment. • Recognize the different types of joints and substrates. • Explain the implications of using chemical strippers, and solvents as related to VOC’s and health hazards. • Identify the classifications and uses of chemicals as related to surface prep operations. • Describe substrate preparation tools and materials. • Identify materials used in drywall finishing and state the purpose and use of each of the following materials: Compounds Joint reinforcing tapes, Trim materials, Textures and Coatings. • Explain the differences in the six levels of finishing established by industry standards. • Identify the hand tools used in Drywall Finishing. • Identify taping and bedding materials. • Describe some of the problems and causes that occur in drywall finishes.
  • Non-Spray Application of Coatings with Lab: • Select proper paint applicators for various paint projects. • Choose proper paint applicators based on its material construction and fiber makeup. • Describe industrial and animal materials used to construct paint rollers and brushes. • Demonstrate the proper methods use to clean roller and paint bush applicators based on their material makeup
  • Construction Materials with Lab: • Select proper paint applicators for various paint projects. • Understand detailed information about the various paint and coating materials used in the industry and their best uses. • apply this knowledge for practical applications and determine the best use for various substrates. • Material covered will include color, tinting, graining, dyes, sealers, and adhering to manufacturer’s requirements of their respective products
  • Spray Painting with Lab: • Identify equipment characteristics, operation, and cleaning protocols. • Demonstrate safe use of spray equipment reflecting the various materials, surfaces, enclosures, and surrounding environments. • Follow manufacturer’s specifications for liquid viscosity, flammability, and recoating times. • Maintain equipment according to standard practices
  • Wallcoverings with Lab: • Identify the basic types of wall coverings, their characteristics, and uses. • Identify the types and categories of commercial wall coverings. • Understand the terms associated with wall covering. • Identify the tools, equipment, adhesives, and other materials commonly used to install wall coverings
  • Abrasive Blasting with Lab: • Explain the proper use of blasting tools and equipment. • Describe surface preparation for various materials to determine types of blasting tools and equipment. • Determine the blasting process for surface cleaning, block sanding, paint removal and primer applications. • Explain blasting techniques for sanding, feather edging, priming and preparation for refinishing
  • Wood Finishing with Lab: • Recognize various wood types and moisture contents. • Demonstrate proper cleaning and prep techniques of wood substrates. • Apply selected sealers, stains, clear coats, and fillers to selected interior/exterior substrates. • Explain the benefits of wood finishes. • Identify and describe the use of basic wood finishing materials. • Demonstrate the wood finishing process.
  • Decorative Finishing with Lab: • Identify required tools and equipment to perform specified decorative finish applications. • Identify the various finishes and material requirements. • Demonstrate appropriate surface preparations for the application of decorative finishes. • Demonstrate requisite tool use and material application to achieve decorative finishes
  • Introduction to Construction Trades: • Explain the origin and history of Union Trade Groups and Apprenticeship Training programs. • Perform knowledge and skills in the areas of leadership, computing, safety and sexual harassment prevention. • Describe Green Building construction principles and energy efficient construction materials. • Demonstrate construction trade math using construction field calculators. • Interpret Architectural Drawings or Building Blueprints.
  • Construction Safety: • Demonstrate the practices and procedures of general construction safety in the areas of electrical and other typical construction operations. • Recognize commonly used construction equipment; apply safety requirements, regulations, and set-backs to basic construction activities. • Explain various methods and techniques of basic construction safety. • Demonstrate the practices and procedures of general construction safety in the areas of electrical and other typical construction operations. • Recognize commonly used construction equipment; apply safety requirements, regulations, and set-backs to basic construction activities. • Explain various methods and techniques of basic construction safety. • Apply OSHA safety methods and operations to general construction activities
  • Business Fundamentals: • Define the general field of business including budgeting, finance, business ethics, communication, stakeholder management, customer service, and productivity tools; • Identify and use these various business skills within a range of customer settings
  • Construction Safety Lab: • demonstrate the practices and procedures of general construction safety in the areas of personal protective equipment and recognizing paint-related hazardous materials. • apply safety requirements and regulations to basic painting activities regarding scaffolds & ladders and associated electrocution hazards. • apply OSHA safety methods and operations to general painting activities
