Description

Objective:

The course objective is to build upon the learning from AW 200 with two additional objectives in developing necessary skills of analytic writing for intelligence. The first is to further hone an analyst’s ability to synthesize or ‘gist’ information, to improve the assessment process, and to sharpen the ability to develop Bottom Line Up Front or BLUFs. The second objective will set all these skills into a teaming environment, as almost all analysts work in teams, not alone. Teaming will permeate every module of AW 300.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the key principles of collaboration in intelligence work
  • Demonstrate ability to craft an analytic by appropriately addressing the four parts of a good intelligence product, BLUF, evidence, meaning, and assessment.
  • Describe ‘gisting’ and demonstrate how synthesizing improves analytic messages
  • Describe the concept of assessment and explain how such analytic judgements distinguish reports from actual intelligence items
  • Explain the key components of a BLUF and why they are essential to intelligence products
  • Demonstrate analytic writing in a team environment and produce collaborative analytic products

General Topics:

  • • key principles of collaboration in intelligence work • ‘gisting’ and how synthesizing improves analytic messages • key components of a BLUF and why they are essential to intelligence products • analytic writing in a team environment
