Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide information that covers the period of United States history from early European colonization to the end of Reconstruction, roughly 1877. In the sections covering the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, emphasis is placed on British colonies.

Learning Outcomes:

  • identify significant areas of historical significance throughout the 1770s and 1800s
  • recall significant developments in American history over a defined span of time, roughly colonial era to the 1870s
  • explain major events which led to the development of the United States including social and political movements
  • identify the major themes of United States history- social, political, economic, and cultural and how those events affected the development of American society
  • discuss thematic events throughout the historical periods studied, including their impact on modern events
  • consider how various social, political, cultural, and economic events encouraged political participation and civic engagement in the Unites States
  • articulate their knowledge of early American history and their experiences of American culture to come to an understanding of how today's uniquely American culture was formed and impacted by these early events
