Description

Objective:

The objective of Pharmacology is to understand how different pharmacotherapeutic agents play a role in treating diseases from an integrated physiological pharmacological perspective. In addition, we examine how these therapeutic concepts are applied to patient care, where we address the role of nurses in developing a comprehensive approach to the clinical application of drug therapy by implementing the nursing process. Since personalized medicine is an emerging area of medical practice, emphasis will be given on the principles of pharmacogenomics and pharmacokinetics. Finally, focus will be on concepts of safe medical practices through advances in information technology.

Learning Outcomes:

  • describe major pharmacotherapeutic agents, their broad classifications and how they affect living things
  • recognize as a professional nurse the right dosage, administration and maintenance of drugs using principles of mathematics, technology and information systems
  • discuss the correct measures while practicing to ensure prevention of medication errors
  • educate patients through effective communication regarding medications and complementary therapies to reduce risk and improve health outcomes
  • appreciate the role of pharmacokinetic and pharmacogenomic principles in drug therapy
  • employ pharmacotherapeutic problem solving skills in patient's acute and chronic conditions
  • predict possible drug interactions including drug-drug and drug-food and apply critical thinking skills for appropriate intervention
  • identify ethical and moral issues related to practice of drug administrations in nursing
  • acknowledge the role of race, age and gender with administration of drug therapy
  • identify drug misuse in society
  • use herbs as natural medicine where appropriate
  • read or design a basic research project ethically and interpret results using principles of biostatistics
  • be abreast in current pharmacological topics
