Description

Objective:

This course gives an overview of the concepts in general, organic, and biological chemistry that are necessary to understand human biochemistry and pharmacology in health science fields. These include measurements, use and conversion of units, significant figures, chemical bonding, stereochemistry, acidity, functional groups, thermodynamics, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleotides, nucleic acids, amino acids, proteins, enzymes, and metabolic pathways.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Use chemical concepts to explain how chemistry is used in various occupations, including health care
  • Read and interpret graphs and data
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of science on society
  • Explain how chemical processes work in the body
  • Demonstrate the ability to think critically and employ critical thinking skills
  • Describe the major chemical reactions, chemical constituents of the body, and the equilibrium state
