Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide the knowledge, skills, and experience required for operation and maintenance of a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) radar beacon/secondary radar system, specifically the Air Traffic Control Beacon Interrogator (ATCBI)-6 and 6M beacon systems, and their supporting sub-systems, equipment, and components.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of Radar concepts and Secondary Radar System theory and operation
  • Antenna hardware configuration
  • Antenna beam/signal patterns and signal phase relationships
  • Signal characteristics and timing of radar beacon interrogation pulses and response pulses
  • Measure and calibrate various beacon system transmitter and receiver performance values/parameters
  • Perform system and sub-system troubleshooting to the LRU (Line Replaceable Unit) level
  • Radar beacon transmitter, receiver, and signal processor operation and characteristics
  • Monopulse radar signal characteristics and techniques
  • .conduct beacon system operation, configuration, initialization, inspection, and performance checks
  • Apply beacon system scheduled/required maintenance procedures, and corrective maintenance procedures
  • Perform beacon system fault analysis using signal tracing, test equipment, and built-in testing and monitoring functions
