Description

Objective:

Joint Nuclear Explosive Ordnance Disposal Course (JNEODC) is a five-day course that provides sustainment education for EOD technicians when responding to a Nuclear Weapon Accident/Incident (NWAI) as part of the Initial Response Force (IRF). The program provides detailed analysis of nuclear weapons hazards, stockpile safety features and safeguards, weapons development, and response protocols. Portions of this course are taught by subject matter experts at the Sandia National Laboratory.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Select hazard mitigation and safety procedures for the Air Launch Cruise Missile (ALCM) / W80-1 weapons system
  • Select safety procedures to mitigate specific hazards of the B61 weapons system
  • Apply safeties to identified hazards associated with the ICBM/Mk12a/W78 and Mk21/W87 weapons systems
  • Analyze SLBM weapons systems functionality, components, hazards, and safety applications
  • Execute a gross damage assessment of a simulated nuclear incident site
  • Apply EOD safeties to identified hazards on the B83 weapons system
  • Apply safety procedures to identified hazards within arming, fuzing, and firing systems for stockpile weapon systems
  • Apply safety procedures to hazards associated with nuclear weapon transport systems and containers
  • Execute Initial Response Force (IRF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) site stabilization procedures for a Prime Nuclear Airlift Force (PNAF) incident
  • Identify nuclear weapon system components, associated hazards, and proper classifications
  • Create an operations order detailing the concept of operations, priorities, precautions, and mitigation techniques for related hazards
  • Analyze the scope of actions required of an Initial Response Force (IRF) EOD Team member during a nuclear incident
  • Develop a comprehensive Concept of Operations (CONOP) and Initial Response Operations Order
  • Apply mechanical damage mitigation techniques to a compromised nuclear weapon system
  • Construct an Emergency Contamination Control Station (ECCS) and execute Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) donning, doffing, and cut-out procedures
  • Explain the historical context of nuclear weapons accidents, applicable DoD/DOE policies, and the phased incident response framework
  • Employ the Joint Nuclear Weapons Publication System (JNWPS) to assess hazards and implement safety protocols for nuclear stockpile weapons
  • Analyze EOD’s roles, responsibilities, and operational sequence as an Initial Response Force (IRF) element during a nuclear weapon accident
