Description

Objective:

The Applied Radiological Response Techniques Level 2 (ARRT-2) course is a comprehensive five-day program designed to apply the theoretical concepts introduced in ARRT-1, with a focus on practical radiological problem-solving techniques. Approximately 20% of the course is conducted in detector laboratories, while the remainder focuses on hands-on practical exercises, quantification of radiological threats, and survey data interpretation. The course has a minimum class size of 7 and a maximum of 15 students, with a planned instructor-to-student ratio of 1:3.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe methods employed to collect and quantify radiation energy using detection equipment
  • Execute radiological search procedures to locate, identify, and quantify unknown radioactive materials in a tactical environment
  • Analyze collected data to characterize unknown radioactive materials
  • Calculate radiation exposure rates, source activity, and operational stay times for various source geometries
  • Select appropriate radiological decontamination techniques and PPE requirements
  • Describe the set-up and operating procedures of the Contamination Control Station (CCS) used in NETOPS
  • Evaluate the airborne radiological hazard in a given area to formulate a respiratory protection plan
  • Design a shielding solution to mitigate a radiological hazard to a specified safe exposure limit
  • Analyze how the AN/PDR-83 Small Area Beta Gamma (SABG) and Alpha/Beta probes respond to varying energies
  • Perform calculations to obtain solutions to a set of supplemental radiological problems
  • Perform a radiological contamination assessment to taking corrective actions to mitigate the threat
  • Determine the concentration of airborne radioactive contamination and recommend the appropriate level of respiratory protection required for a known isotope in a notionally contaminated environment
  • Determine the half-value layer (HVL) for field expedient shielding materials
  • Perform a comprehensive radiological assessment, implement shielding strategies, and prepare an actionable command back brief
