Description

Objective:

Nuclear Emergency Team Operations (NETOPS) is a ten-day, hands-on course for DoW and DOE personnel in EOD, Bioenvironmental, Health Physics, CBRNE, or other emergency response force positions. The course provides education on basic nuclear physics, biological effects of ionizing radiation, applied use of radiation detection equipment, applied use of personal protective equipment, survey methods, and Command and Control (C2) functions. The course culminates with four days of field exercises where students practice their knowledge of nuclear emergency team operations in a realistic nuclear weapon accident environment.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explain the intersect of history and nuclear weapon accidents
  • Explain the nuclear weapon transport methods and delivery systems
  • Discuss the domestic U.S. and DoD incident response to a nuclear weapon accident /incident
  • Identify radiation basics
  • Identify radiation units of measure
  • Explain the concepts of radiation exposure guidance
  • Describe nuclear weapon characteristics
  • Describe the biological effects of ionizing radiation
  • Discuss psychological effects of ionizing radiation
  • Understand Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and safety considerations
  • Identify the primary non-radiological hazard present at a nuclear weapon accident site
  • Describe methods employed to collect and communicate radiation energy using detection equipment
  • Discuss the radiation detection equipment used at NETOPS
  • Discuss the concepts of operations for Air Sampling and NETOPS standard operating procedures
  • Apply DNWS-specific survey plotting procedures
  • Discuss personal protective equipment used at NETOPS
  • Apply operating procedures for the Contamination Control Station (CCS) used in NETOPS
  • Identify medical specific requirements of the CCS and downrange
  • Discuss the common operating picture used during the NETOPS field training exercises
