Description

Objective:

The Instructor Orientation & Training Course (IOTC) is a five-day, foundational-level resident program designed to equip personnel with standard teaching methods and current training techniques. Serving as the essential prerequisite for the Initial Instructor Certification Board (ICB), this course provides the bedrock for instructor qualification and certification. Throughout the 40-hour program, participants immerse themselves in the fundamentals of adult learning theory, effective communication, and classroom management. Instructors-in-training will explore a variety of instructional strategies, including direct instruction, collaborative learning, and the Experiential Learning Model (ELM). The curriculum actively blends classroom theory with practical application, allowing students to map learning levels to tangible teaching approaches. Participants will build their competencies by working from short instructional practicums to increasingly comprehensive sessions, receiving continuous peer and evaluator feedback. Students also learn how to appropriately assess learners, utilize DNWS instructional support capabilities, and maintain a safe, engaging, and positive classroom environment. The course culminates in a final practicum where candidates must demonstrate mastery of instructional methods, content knowledge delivery, and effective student engagement. Ultimately, IOTC ensures that all military and civilian instructors assigned to DNWS are fully prepared to deliver high-quality, impactful training to the joint force.
